Want to give the airline industry a metaphorical thumb in the eye? Travel without baggage.

Security screeners won't get to paw through your underwear, baggage handlers will have to find somebody else's shoes to try on in the break room and the airlines will be unable to gouge you with fees for checked luggage.

But, you may ask, how can someone go on vacation without extra clothes?

Two words: the nakation.

It's the idea of the 40,000-adherent American Association for Nude Recreation, which is looking for some new faces. "About1in10 people have told various polling folks that they'd appreciate the chance to put a little naked in their vacation, whether by visiting a nude beach or perhaps being in a clothing-optional place," said Erich Schuttauf, the association's executive director. "So we thought if we could ever capture one out of 10 people in the travel market, we'd take those numbers."

A small carry-on is all the nakation traveler will need. A cap, sunglasses, shoes, toiletries and sunscreen will cover just about everything that needs to be covered.

Of course, the nakation won't fly for just any trip. Showing up at Aunt Minnie's with only a pair of sneakers would be problematic. So the association suggests spending your holiday at one of its 250 clubs.

To welcome anyone interested in dipping a toe into nude waters, the association is offering The Nakation in a Box, a lovely package that includes a guide to North American nude recreation, a nakation towel, a window sticker, temporary tattoos and, naturally, sunscreen. Just $74 plus shipping.

"We've had a lot of fun with it," Schuttauf said of the whole nakation concept.

"It's interesting. It's enabled us to reach people who wouldn't have given us a try."

And in case you're wondering, the association already is on record endorsing full-body scanning machines.
